Review of Labour Ward written by a patient
22nd September 2017

The care I received throughout my extremely long labour was amazing, I attended when I was in the early stages of labour but due to the pain I was kept on delivery and given analgesia. Robyn was very caring and compassionate then the night team came on and Helen (worked at Doncaster) was my named midwife. She was also amazing, very caring, compassionate and thoughtful. Helen listened to me but also kept me calm and was good company when my husband and mum fell asleep. Due to complications I needed an emergency section which was undertaken with great speed, the theatre team, registrar (female, not sure of her name) and anaesthetist Kathleen were another example of the great staff you have. They kept me fully informed through it all. All of the staff I had seen during the night including the theatre team came to see us on the recovery area despite being past their finishing time. Then the recovery nurse took over and again was fantastic, she cared for myself and even treat my husband to a cup of tea. All of your team went the extra mile and it was greatly appreciated. A credit to the NHS. Downsides- -labour room was freezing all night, even the staff put their hoodies on when they came in. - lack of comfy chairs for birthing partners - birth partners unable to sit at the bedside - no wheelchairs on hospital entrance, it's a long walk to the delivery ward when your contracting every 3 minutes or so. The caterer had to help me upto the ward and get me a wheelchair. I'm not sure if her name but I was very thankful for her. Overall really positive and praise should be given to all of the team.

Excellent service through out The service my daughter received was second to none. The midwife Helen was amazing, compassionate and very helpful I cannot thank the team enough for the care my daughter received. One thing that could be improved massively . My daughter had a 26 hour labour The delivery room she was in had no decent furniture that allows for sleep or rest for the birthing partner. The room had two vey uncomfortable rocking chairs which were very hard. No good what so ever. It also has a small bench to sit on however again very uncomfortable - sleep was desperately needed whilst waiting for the birth to happen and due to a very long labour but there was no facilities to support this. The room was very cold and even the midwife was cold. I asked for the heating to be put on as I was chilled to the bone but was advised they could not alter the centralized system. I was so very cold I ended up using the babys blanket to try to keep warm. Overall the service was exceptional but the room was badly furnished

Review of A&E written by a family member

Called ambulance at 12am, it arrived at 1.17am It's 4.25am and my mum still hasn't seen a Dr, although we did overhear a conversation between staff members about how good it would be to have a sniper on the roof to keep out people who don't need to be in a&e. Told them are very busy but lots of standing around chatting doesn't help us believe that. Extremely frustrated by the total lack of communication with us.

Review of Ward 200 (HRI) written by a family member
10th September 2017

In spite of being told my Mother in Law had bumped her head in a fall and was very confused, she was given a cursory examination and sent to the discharge lounge for 8 hours while transport was arranged for her. On arrival back at her care home she was still very confused and covered in fresh bruises. She was immediately sent back to HRI by her GP where she received a CT scan which revealed she had a brain haemorrhage. We can only assume that the doctor who examined her made the assumption her confusion was down to dementia, but they made no effort to carry out a scan or contact the care home, or her family to check her normal mental state. She was discharged from A&E in less than 2 hours but not monitored in the discharge lounge.

Review of A&E written by a patient
7th August 2017

I have a suspected ectopic pregnancy, I was referred by the out of hours gap to come straight to a&e. I then sat for nearly for 4 hours with even seeing a triage nurse. the junior doctor I saw was really nice and caring but the rest of the service was shocking. Seeing people who were drunk being seen before me was very frustrating, the dr even said I should have definitely being higher priority. The system needs rectifying.

Review of Ward 110 (Stroke Unit) written by a carer
27th July 2017

Daughter of patient reporting. While I'm sure everyone is doing their best the ward is loud, the cleaners bang and crash, the nurses laugh and share personal stories as they are turning a patient. It's very hard to get any kind of rest. Also the food does not seem to align with the sort of anti inflammatory diet you'd want a stroke victim to eat. Lots of sugar offered and dairy which are both inflammatory in the body. Staff were laughing at a patient as he was trying to tell them what he wanted, I know it's hard to understand him but he wasn't making a joke, he was trying his best to be understood. A little more compassion and awareness is required all around. People are having the worst time of their lives, they've lost their dignity and independence, they are being bossed around by young strangers who cackle and heave them about. Unless a family member seeks out medical staff for an update none is given. It's hard to get information regarding care. There should be a more efficient way to communicate with family members, to provide updated information on a daily basis. My father has had the NG tube inserted into his lung and left there for some time before it was discovered, he fell going to the bathroom unaided, the floor around his bed was sticky from vomit. Very upsetting. As a side note - not of great importance - the on-hold music on the phone system is infuriating and outdated.

Review of Ward 4 (Neurosurgery) written by a patient
24th July 2017

For a neurosurgery department that covers such a large geographic area it does a good job of juggling to get as many people treated as soon possible. Very clean & tidy. The meal menu is varied with generous portion sizes to aid patient recovery. If you require something different the staff always do there best to find an alternative meal for you. Bathroom & toilet facilities could do with being increased and upgraded. There needs to be consideration as to the distance patient's need walk to use the facilities.

Review of Ward 33 (Rowan/Beech Ward) written by a patient
20th July 2017

The midwives and student midwives were very helpful and kind especially with respect to teaching me how to breastfeed. Being a first time mother I was anxious about everything and found them very informative. The only area where I feel needs improvement is help for mothers who have had a c-section and are immobile initially. Either we should be allowed to have our partner or a female relative stay with us overnight to help or they need to provide more help. I felt I needed help as my baby did not sleep at all the 2 nights I was in hospital and insisted on being held at all times. Having had a c-section which is major surgery after all I struggled to care for her on my own and was exhausted as I didn't get a moments rest and was not even able to eat my meals till my partner came in the day time and held our baby. When I buzzed for the nurses they came but couldn't get the baby to settle down. And to be fair to them they were short staffed and couldn't be expected to stay with me at all times as they had so many other patients to care for. The second night one of the student midwives took pity on me and held my baby for half an hour around 4.30am so that I could use the toilet, eat my dinner and rest for a bit.
